What You Need to Know About Your Appointment

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan is a non-invasive, painless medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body. It is also known as sonography.

How should I prepare for an ultrasound?

Preparation will differ depending on the area and organ scanned. To produce good quality images, the patient is asked to fast for at least eight to 12 hours prior to the exam. For other examinations, you may be asked to drink a lot of water e.g. a bladder examination. Be sure to follow our staff’s directions after making your appointment.

What do I need to make an appointment for an ultrasound?

You must first visit a doctor, and receive a written referral to access an ultrasound.

How long does the ultrasound exam take?

The amount of time depends on the particular body part being imaged. Most general ultrasound exams take approximately 30 minutes. It should be noted that for an in-home application, the sonographer will have to set up for the examination and this preparation time will add to the overall time of the exam.

Who will be taking the ultrasound?

An experienced sonographer who has graduated from a recognised sonography program and holds current registration with the Radiographers’ Board.

What will the sonographer do?

The sonographer will apply an odourless and water-soluble gel to your skin. This helps to transmit the sound waves and allows the probe or transducer to slide easily over your skin while taking pictures.

Does having an ultrasound hurt?

No. The entire ultrasound procedure is non-invasive and pain-free.

Are taking ultrasounds harmful?

Unlike other imaging techniques, ultrasounds use no radiation and the sound waves produced are not harmful when properly applied for the purpose of medical diagnostic imaging.

What will I get after the procedure?

After the diagnostic images are processed, you will be given a CD with the images taken. If you prefer, the images and a sonographer’s report can also be forwarded to you and your doctor via email and upon request.

Can the sonographer read my ultrasound?

Yes, sonographers who are registered with the Radiographers’ Board can legally read the images and prepare a report. Our reporting system is robust, and the sonographer is always in close communication with our radiologist for quality control and assurance.
